Job Description

Nordstrom needs your help to ensure that we continue to be the best fashion retailer in a digital world. The Merchandising Strategy team is seeking a smart, motivated person to join us as a Strategy Associate and drive strategic change at scale within the Merchandising organization and in partnership with cross-functional teams. You will be working on impactful initiatives that shape the future of retail at Nordstrom and transform how we do business. Beyond just focusing on our strategies, you’ll partner closely with merchant leaders and lead teams to put recommendations into action.

 A day in the life….

  • Drive positive outcomes for Nordstrom and our customers by utilizing your ability to generate business insights and your knack for solving problems
  • Create stories that effectively communicate insights and recommendations and that lead the organization to change
  • Conduct primary and secondary research; develop quantitative models to generate insights from data
  • Contribute to project inputs, at times across multiple workstreams / projects
  • Proactively leverage knowledge of internal dynamics and external industry developments to shape project objectives and outcomes
  • Engage in program management efforts for strategic programs and activities supporting strategy execution
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders—building trust and credibility—to support initiatives that are fundamentally changing the way we work at Nordstrom
  • Facilitate meetings and workshops, including prep and follow-up actions, to gather information that will inform strategies and to align stakeholders on the path forward
  • Build credibility with business partners to gain support for analyses and recommendations, and lead the development of a customer-first, data-driven mindset among stakeholders
  • Assist with development of Kpis and strategic objectives; establish measurement plans and work with analytics partners to execute
  • Collaborate with partners across functions including strategy, finance, analytics, marketing, digital, product management, and technology

  • Strong strategic storytelling, recommendation development, and presentation development skills
  • Strong quantitative skills, including setting clear hypotheses and building models to generate insights from a variety of data types / sources
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to develop project plans and independently manage project execution
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with cross functional partners across all levels of the organization
  • Strategic mindset and the ability to sift through complexity to find business opportunities
  • Can handle ambiguity and still translate ideas into action
  • Comfortable presenting information and communicating across all levels of the organization
  • A strong interest in retail and an understanding of industry of industry dynamics

Functional Competencies…

  • Strong proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

You own this if you have…

  • 2+ years of experience in areas such as corporate strategy, management consulting, business operations, corporate development, or investment banking.
  • Experience with retail or consumer-facing industries. Direct experience with retail merchandising a plus.
  • Experience creating and implementing business strategies; experience with transformation efforts a plus
  • Experience analyzing data to identify trends and diagnose opportunities and interventions
  • Experience presenting complex material in a digestible, consumable manner to executives and senior leaders
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or relevant Master’s degree a plus

Location:

  • This is a hybrid position open to applicants located in Seattle, WA or New York City, NY.

Compensation Details:

  • The pay range(s) below are provided in compliance with state specific laws. Position may be eligible for discretionary bonus compensation. Pay ranges may be different in other locations.
  • New York: $68,500 – 144,500
