Job Description

The Director of Income Tax is responsible for all aspects of Global Income Tax accounting, compliance, planning, and audits. The Director will work with operations, finance, taxing authorities, and external service providers to identify issues, implement strategies, and ensure accurate tax reporting and compliance for the organization. This position reports to the VP of Tax.

Internal and External Financial Accounting & Reporting

  • Ensure the quarterly and annual income tax provisions and disclosures are timely and accurately prepared in accordance with the relevant US GAAP, SEC, and other authoritative guidance related to accounting for income taxes
  • Drive process improvement and automation initiatives to increase the speed, efficiency and accuracy of tax accounting processes
  • Maximize the utilization of technology tools such as Onesource Tax Provision, Alteryx, Essbase, Oracle EPM and others to optimize close processes
  • Assist in management and minimization of the NMG’s consolidated effective tax rate for financial statement purposes
  • Manage the financial statement auditor review of income tax provision calculations, disclosures and
  • Ensure accurate and efficient implementation of reporting changes and disclosures related to changes in the business, tax law, and/or financial accounting standards
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with Sox controls related to area of responsibility
  • Coordinate with the larger finance organization to forecast effective tax rates, cash taxes, and deferred tax assets and liabilities
  • Interface with the business to identify and properly account for tax risks and disclosures

Compliance

  • Manage and assist external service providers in the preparation of US and international income tax returns
  • Oversee the accurate and timely filing of tax returns, extensions, income and franchise tax payments, and annual reports in all jurisdictions, incorporating all planning opportunities available to minimize income tax liabilities
  • Develop and maintain efficient processes for the collection of and flow of tax return information to and from external service providers
  • Build relationships with other departments to coordinate and develop complete and accurate information for tax calculations and filings
  • Monitor and ensure the accuracy of the tax fixed asset accounting processes
  • Oversee unclaimed property and withholding tax compliance

Tax Controversy & Planning

  • Identify tax risk and offer viable solutions to mitigate risk
  • Prepare for and defend income tax audits, including providing support for tax positions, maintaining appropriate documentation, and negotiating settlements
  • Research complex tax issues and analyze appropriately to a defendable conclusion, including assisting other departments with the resolution of tax issues as they arise
  • Proactive involvement in understanding the NMG’s business strategies and direction in order to identify and develop near and long-term tax and financial strategies
  • Identify and build a case for tax savings opportunities, implement effective solutions, and measure and communicate results

Management and Strategic Ability

  • Stay current with changes in Us and international tax law, US GAA, unclaimed property tax regulations, and income tax withholding rules, communicating significant changes to management
  • Identify, lead and implement changes which streamline or optimize tax function processes or procedures
  • Develop a deep understand of the Neiman Marcus business and accounting practices
  • Understand tax issues relevant to the industry, utilize external networks to further key business needs and objectives, and assist with legislative and lobbying efforts as needed
  • Manage and develop tax department associates in alignment with department goals and the Company’s talent development and retention strategies
  • Assign and delegate responsibilities to associates which provide the appropriate balance of opportunities, training, mentorship and growth
  • Champion and/or lead projects and Company initiatives as they arise

Qualifications

  • Master’s in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics or other related field
  • Certified Public Accountant
  • 12+ years of income tax experience, with a combination of industry and public accounting.
  • A strong technical knowledge of corporate tax provision and compliance issues for large companies. Knowledge of retail industry issues a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with US GAA, ASC 740, and Sec reporting; Exposure to international tax preferred
  • Experience using Onesource Tax Provision, Alteryx, Essbase, Oracle EPM, and Oracle
  • Commitment to process improvement and exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency with technology to analyze, manipulate and data
  • Ability to stay organized in a fast-paced environment, prioritizes multiple projects, meets all deadlines, and is dependable with a sense of personal responsibility for quality work product.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as function and an independent leader with demonstrated leadership qualities, the ability to lead a team, and supervisory experience
  • Adaptable to changing priorities with a commitment to ethical responsibilities
