Summary
The CNC Machinist II sets up and operates CNC and manual machines and inspects parts to ensure products meet specifications and company quality standards. The role works with multi-axis lathes and mills (3-, 4- and 5-axis), determines cutting tool offsets, uses MDI and assists programmers with edits, and troubleshoots machine errors. The position also supports new product implementation, documents process revisions, and trains and mentors CNC operators and machinists.
Responsibilities
- Set up, operate and maintain CNC lathes and vertical mills, including 3-, 4- and 5-axis machines.
- Perform tool touch off procedures, determine tool compensation and wear offsets, and implement alternative tooling approaches.
- Changeover product setups including fixturing, stops, datum offsets and indicators and monitor cutting tool wear.
- Use MDI, assist with program editing, evaluate machine alarms, troubleshoot and repair equipment or escalate to programmers/facilities as needed.
- Maintain coolant, lubrication systems and clean work areas; perform deburring and chip cleaning operations.
- Participate in new product development implementation and document revisions to work orders, instructions and inspection documentation.
- Train, mentor and cross-train CNC operators and machinists and propose continuous improvement opportunities.
Requirements
- Eight plus years of machining experience on CNC equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience; college-level manufacturing certification preferred.
- Proficient with CNC lathe and CNC vertical mill setup and operation across multi-axis machines.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical instructions and work orders.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions.
- Good communication skills in English and ability to train and lead others.
- Basic skills in MS Office, familiarity with lean manufacturing, and availability to work overtime as scheduled.
