Skilled artisan responsible for preparing and distressing wood furniture to achieve authentic aged character using traditional hand and impact tools. Works within the Formations Workshop to evaluate wood, select appropriate distressing methods, and collaborate with finishers to ensure the final design intent is met while maintaining consistent craftsmanship standards.
Responsibilities
- Apply distressing techniques to simulate age wear and historical character on wood furniture
- Use hand and impact tools such as wire brushes chisels sandpaper and carving tools for controlled distressing
- Collaborate with finishers to ensure distressing complements final finishes and design intent
- Evaluate wood surfaces and choose appropriate distressing methods based on specifications and wood type
- Maintain consistency across multiple pieces while preserving individual characteristics
- Prepare and clean surfaces for finishing ensuring proper adhesion and surface quality
- Maintain tools materials and documentation to meet craftsmanship standards
Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of experience in furniture distressing woodworking or finishing preparation
- Proficiency in methods such as dry brushing edge wear gouging and burnishing
- Skilled in using hand and impact tools for controlled distressing
- Strong understanding of wood grain hardness and species response to aging and finishing
- Attention to detail artistry and historical authenticity in distressing patterns
- Familiarity with antique style furniture and traditional finishing aesthetics preferred
- Experience in high end or custom furniture production preferred
- Portfolio or examples of previous distressing or finishing work preferred
