Summary
The Manager, Payroll Tax and Reporting leads North America payroll tax compliance and general ledger reconciliations for multi-jurisdictional payrolls (US and Canada). This role serves as the primary contact for audits and tax authorities, partners with Payroll, Finance, and HR, and drives process improvements to ensure accurate, timely filings and strong internal controls. The manager also oversees equity taxation, blended rate methodologies, year-end reporting, and mentors a team of payroll tax professionals.
Responsibilities
- Oversee timely filing and payment of payroll tax obligations across federal, state, provincial, and local jurisdictions.
- Manage payroll tax reporting for US forms (941, 940, W-2/W-3) and Canadian slips (T4, T4A, PD7A).
- Lead month-end and year-end reconciliations between payroll subledger and the general ledger, investigate variances, and prepare quarterly analyses.
- Manage audits and maintain audit-ready documentation for SOX and internal control testing; liaise with taxing authorities and third-party vendors.
- Oversee equity taxation, blended rate calculations, and collaborate with Stock Administration and Finance on data flows to payroll and GL.
- Coach and develop direct reports, drive process improvements, and support special projects and system upgrades.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
- 7+ years of progressive payroll tax or payroll accounting experience supporting large-scale environments.
- 3+ years of direct people management experience.
- Deep knowledge of US and Canadian payroll tax regulations, multi-state compliance, and SOX/internal controls.
- Proficiency with advanced Excel (VLOOKUPs, PivotTables) and experience with payroll providers such as ADP.
- Experience with equity compensation taxation (RSUs/options) and blended payroll tax methodologies; CPP or similar certification preferred.
