Job Description

Overview

A globally-recognized, New York–based women’s fashion house is seeking a Director of Merchandising & Buying to own the end-to-end product strategy across retail, e-commerce, and wholesale channels. Partnering closely with the CEO, founder, and design leadership, you will translate creative vision and market insights into commercially winning assortments, seasonal line plans, and growth-driving initiatives. The role is based in the brand’s Manhattan headquarters and requires a hands-on merchant with a proven eye for trend, deep analytical rigor, and experience scaling an omnichannel business.

Key Responsibilities

Line Planning & Assortment Strategy
  • Build seasonal merchandise plans that balance brand storytelling with margin and turn objectives.
  • Identify product opportunities through market, competitive, and sell-through analysis, presenting data-driven recommendations to senior leadership.
Product Selection & Buying
  • Own OTB, SKU mix, and cost negotiations from concept through final buy.
  • Partner with design to brief into collections, ensuring each delivery reflects customer need and regional nuances.
Omnichannel Merchandising
  • Curate visual and digital assortments that create a cohesive brand narrative across flagship retail, pop-ups, e-commerce, and key wholesale doors.
  • Optimize category cadence, depth, and pricing to maximize full-price sell-through and minimize markdowns.
Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Collaborate with Planning, Marketing, and Retail Operations to align inventory, launch calendars, and promotional strategies.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a small team of merchants and assistant buyers.
Business Expansion
  • Provide merchant expertise for new distribution opportunities—additional stores, international partners, collaborations, and capsule drops.
  • Track global fashion trends, consumer insights, and competitive movements to keep the brand at the forefront of the contemporary market.
Requirements
  • 8+ years’ progressive merchandising and/or buying experience within premium or contemporary women’s apparel.
  • Demonstrated success managing OTB, margin, and inventory KPIs for both brick-and-mortar and digital channels.
  • Acute trend awareness paired with strong financial acumen; able to balance creative intuition with analytical decision-making.
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional partners, negotiate with vendors, and present to executive leadership.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset comfortable in a nimble, growth-stage environment.
  • Based in New York City and able to work on-site a minimum of four days per week.
