Manual Machinist

Summary

The Manual Machinist will set up and operate manual lathes, mills, grinders and related machines to produce precision components to blueprint specifications. The role requires developing and repairing fixtures and tooling, performing first-article inspections and spot checks, and supporting R&D and production tooling needs. The machinist must troubleshoot issues, perform tool grinding as needed, and work closely with engineers to achieve tight tolerances and quality surface finishes.

Responsibilities

• Set up and run manual machines including Hardinge lathes, Bridgeport mills, surface grinders, and tool grinders.
• Perform machining operations such as turning, boring, threading, knurling, slotting, drilling and tapping.
• Select suitable tooling and cutters and develop/repair fixtures and tooling for short runs and CNC production.
• Inspect first-run pieces and conduct spot checks to ensure conformance to blueprints using precision measuring equipment.
• Troubleshoot machining issues and collaborate with engineers on R&D projects; perform tool grinding as required.

Requirements

• Technical school education or 5+ years of related machining experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, work orders and procedure manuals.
• Proficiency with measuring tools (micrometers, vernier, height gauges, bore gauges, comparators, vision systems) and maintaining tight tolerances.
• Working knowledge of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; strong problem-solving and attention to detail.
• Ability to work overtime when needed and communicate technical decisions clearly in writing and verbally.
